The recent tour of The Garcia Project brought audiences a faithful tribute to the Jerry Garcia Band, recreating classic sets from the 70’s through the mid-90’s.

With each night featuring a different venue, a different rig, and a new setlist, consistency in lighting control became essential. To manage this ever-changing environment, lighting designer James Nealy relied on the MEGA Console from MEGA-LITE, running Lumen8 software.

Having used the MEGA Console for several years across a variety of productions, Nealy took it on the road with confidence. Its compact footprint allowed him to maintain a clean and efficient front-of-house setup, while its durable construction proved reliable throughout the demands of touring. Night after night, the console delivered stable performance, becoming a dependable part of the show.

One of the key advantages during the tour was the flexibility of the Lumen8 software. With a base showfile built before hitting the road, Nealy was able to adapt quickly to each venue using the console’s intuitive fixture morphing tools. This allowed him to clone programmed scenes, cues, and effects across different rigs with minimal effort, significantly reducing programming time for a show with hundreds of cues.

“Every night we walked into a completely different rig”, shared Nealy. “The MEGA Console and Lumen8 made it easy to adapt. The fixture morphing and preset workflow saved me hours of programming, and I could focus more on the show itself instead of rebuilding it from scratch”

Working with a wide range of fixtures from different brands was another challenge the system handled with ease. Lumen8’s support for the GDTF files allowed quick importing of the fixtures profiles, while the built-in profile builder provided a straightforward way to create custom profiles when needed. This flexibility ensured seamless integration, even with unfamiliar or off-brand equipment commonly found in house rigs.

“Between GDTF support and profile builder, I was able to work with anything the venue had” Nealy added. “It felt like the system was designed for this kind of touring; fast, adaptable, and reliable.”

For Nealy, the MEGA Console struck the right balance between performance and practicality. Designed for small to mid-sized venues, it provided the control, speed, and creative flexibility needed for live adjustments, all while remaining accessible and efficient for touring productions.

The Garcia Project tour demonstrated how the MEGA Console continues to support lighting professionals in dynamic environments, delivering reliable performance and adaptable control wherever the road leads.
